Knowing God … as Creator

… as Creator.

I made some lemon drizzle cake the other day.  It came out okay and the final process was to drizzle a lemon solution over the top of it, leaving that lovely sugared lemon coating.  To be honest, the last bit didn’t go too well – I didn’t reduce it enough before pouring it over and it made the whole cake wet.  Nevertheless, the illustration still works.  Using lemon in the cake mix leaves a lovely lemon taste throughout the whole cake.  I believe creation is like that.  God’s hand in creation means that his character and personality are running through every part of it, from the awesomeness of an infinite universe, to the fact that he cares about every last little detail.  Every act he performs is like pouring the drizzle over the cake, leaving an unmistakable ‘taste’ of his involvement.

It’s this we’re thinking about.  Not so much creation, but the creator.

I like questions; they make me think.  Allow me to ask you to think about some questions as you read this:

Whereas these questions might be interesting:

  • —Is this a new earth or an old earth? —
  • Did creation happen in 7 literal days? —
  • Could the manner of creation have involved a big bang? —

These questions are really important:

  • —Is life an accident of science?
  • —Does creation show signs of intelligent design? —
  • Does creation show signs of being for a purpose? —
  • Is humanity created for a relationship with the Creator?

As Christians we are certain there is no accident here.  We are all part of the Creator’s (God’s) magnificent design!

So let me ask you to think about these questions  You may want pen and paper for this:

  1. Why might it be important to know God as Creator?  (Take time to answer this)
  2. What are some of the things we can know about God when we consider Creation? (Take time…)
  3. How do we get to know, and develop a knowledge of, Creator God? (Take time…)

One of the songs we sang on Sunday was the great Chris Tomlin song, ‘Indescribable’:

From the highest of heights to the depths of the sea
Creation’s revealing Your majesty
From the colours of fall to the fragrance of spring
Every creature unique in the song that it sings

Think about the line ‘Creation’s revealing your majesty’.  How many things can you think of that show that’s true?  List them.

The final line of the song says, ‘You see the depths of my heart and you love me the same’. What is revealed about the Creator’s nature in this line?

Genesis 1 and John 1 start with the same 3 words – ‘In the beginning…’.

  • ‘In the beginning God created…’ (Gen 1.1)
  • ‘In the beginning was the Word…’ (John 1.1)

The first defines God as Creator:  The second places the Lord Jesus there before the beginning.

Meditate on these verse.  As your mind dwells on these thoughts, ask yourself these two questions:

  1. What reasons are there for creation do you think?
  2. What does this reveal about God’s character and personality?

Now spend some time praying about you ‘Knowing God as Creator’

Suggested Bible readings: Genesis 1; 1-5 & 26-31, Jeremiah 9: 23-25 & Psalm 139: 13-18

The Scripture  reveals to us not only our origin but the identity and character of the One who created us.
It reveals both His power and the steadfast love He has for His creation. Do you find it difficult to love other people? If so it just may be that pride won’t let you because you are not properly related to the Creator.

You see, the Creator is love and the source of all love stems from knowing Him. The Scriptures teach us;
”for God is love.”

If we’re not relating to God as Creator, we will walk around in the dark, so when it comes to other relationships, we will be rendered incapable of receiving love as well as rendering love in return. In fact not being able to relate to God as Creator, the source of love, will cause us to live a life opposite of love and that is a life of selfishness!

Additionally if we don’t know God as Creator we will not be able to distinguish truth from falsehood. For not only is the Creator the source of love and light, He also has the “market” on truth. Jesus say’s in John 14:6 “I am the way, the truth, and the life.”

You may be asking, “What does Jesus have to do with relating to God as our Creator?” That’s a good question.
I believe we can easily answer this by looking to the ultimate source of truth, the Scriptures. We read; “The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.” John 1:2-3 Col 1:16-17

What a unique position the Creator has put us in that He would allow Himself to be discovered by mankind. And just how has He done this? Will, one way is through His creation.

Again we read; “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard….For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.” Psalms 19:1-3, Romans 1:20-22 (KJV).

And if all that were not enough how assuring is fact that this Great Creator would stoop from His high position to have regard for my own personal concerns and gives His own promise never to leave or forsake me. “The LORD will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O LORD, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands.” Psalms 138:8 (KJV)
